POSTCARD VIEWS OF COURTHOUSE
Subject
The topic of the resource
Coweta County Courthous
Description
An account of the resource
The Coweta County Courthouse has been a favorite scene for photographers over the years, and it has appeared on a number of postcards. James D. Ferguson shares these scenes from two early postcards, along with some information on postcard dating. At top is a "linen" card, produced in color, which would have been made in the period 1930 to 1945. Ferguson said the linen texture of such cards was made by using linen in the paper producing rolls. The other scene is from a "Private Mailing Card," which were generally in use from 1898 to about 1901. This card has printed on the address side: "Private Mailing Card, Authorized by Act of Congress May 19, 1898." Its postmark is from Newnan about 1907, and it was sent to Huntsville, Alabama. Since the Private Mailing Card was being replaced by the early 1900s, the scene shown was most likely very soon after the 1904 courthouse was in use. It is probably among the earliest postcard scenes made of Newnan. The following categories are of use in dating postcards: Pioneer era, 1870 to 1898; Private Mailing Card, 1898 to 1901; Undivided Back Cards, where there was no space for the message on the back and it was usually written on top of the picture, 1901 to 1907; Divided back, 1907 to 1915; White Border, 1916 to 1930 (there are some cards produce until 1920 without a white border); Linen , 1930 to 1945; and Chrome or modern, 1946 on.

MURRAY WAREHOUSE BLOCK
Subject
The topic of the resource
Downtown Newnan, Murray Warehouse block
Description
An account of the resource
This postcard scene of the Murray Warehouse Block building just off the Court Square on West Washington Street. The postcard listed the address as 2450 West Washington, about which Pinson is surprised because he started Newnan Electric Company in part of the building in 1953 - but the address was 11 West Washington. The building is now at 7, 9, 11, and 13 West Washington, he said. The scene is probably around the turn of the century; a sign on the building shows it was constructed in 1895 and the mode of travel was still by horse and wagon. Pinson said he did not know Mr. Dan Manget had a cigar factory in the building, as shown by the signs on the building and wagon, which is apparently carrying a large load of tobacco. The card was given to Pinson by Mrs. Manget.

Magnet Building Renovation, before and after
Description
An account of the resource
These scenes show the "before and after" of the Magnet Building at LaGrange and Spring Streets in downtown Newnan at the time of a remodeling in 1947 and 1948. The top photo shows the building while the remodeling work was going on in 1947. The second photo at bottom shows the completed renovation on October 1, 1948. The new businesses were Hudson Hardware Cr., Lindsey Electric Co. and Johnson's Men's Wear. Johnson's in the corner shot at Spring was opened by Thomas M. John, Jr., in April 1948. He was assisted at the store by Roy Flournoy, according to a May 6, 1948, newspaper account. Hudson Hardware at its opening was proud of the store's "modern" feature, including a then-enormous expanse of glass covering nearly the whole front of the store, "ultra-modern" lighting to illuminate the display islands and shelving designed by the National Retail Hardware Association to give "maximum display" to hardwares and housewares. The store included 5,000 feet of display space and a store room in the rear.

Arnall Grocery Opening, 1929
Description
An account of the resource
This crowd was gathered for the opening of a new self-service grocery started by the H.C. Arnall Merchandise Company on April 17, 1929. The photo, a companion to another published in this feature April 21, 1987, is provided y Dorsey Beavers, present owner of Arnall Grocery Company on East Broad. The company had moved from what is now the Kessler's building to the former Burdett warehouse building on the northeast corner of Perry and East Washington Street. Arnall Merchandise, founded in 1869, was celebrating 60 years of business in Newnan with a grand opening sale. The retail store where customers served themselves rather than having orders filled by clerks was a new concept, and the was the first such self-service super store in Georgia, according to Beavers. The company continued to operate a wholesale grocery business in part of the building. In later years the store was known as the Krazy Kat. Shortly after World War II, the company name was shortened to Arnall Grocery Company. The building that covered half a city block burned February 18 and 19, 1978, in a fire so intense that it cracked windows of Craft Cleaners across the street. At that time, Beavers noted that the location was once a slave market, that during the Civil War it was a hospital for soldiers, and after the Battle of Brown's Mill was a prison for federal soldiers. Used as warehouse and full of cotton, a building at the spot burned at one point and was built again, Beavers said. At the time of the 1978 fire, Millians and Thompson grocery had been operating in the East Broad Street end of the building for 13 months and Arnall Grocery was using the back for storage. Arnall Grocery Company had been purchased by Beavers in 1976 from Joe Arnall, father of former Gov. Ellis Arnall, and moved to a larger building down East Broad. After the debris was cleared, Gov. Arnall later agreed for the land to be used as a city parking lot.

This view of Lee-King Drugstore in downtown Newnan on East Court Square is from about 1914. The scene is from a post card provided by J.B. Newman. Note the awning that was rolled down when the sunlight came from the west in the afternoons. The store has been remodeled over the years. Residents of Newnan from the 1940's will remember the curb service ice cream.

Description
An account of the resource
This Miller family photo was taken at the old Jim Powell home on Greenville Street about 1901. The home is now used as a church, according to Artie Storey, who submitted the picture for her husband Tom Storey's great aunt, Sarah Elizabeth "Sallie" Miller Bailey. Aunt Sallie, the little girl at far right on the front row leaning against her mother's knee, celebrated her 88th birthday in January and is the only person from the group still living. From left are, front, Sam Hill Miller, Bud or "Burt M." Miller, William Henry Bryson Miller, Mary Love "Mamie" Miller who married Lamar Smith in 1904, Willie Clyde Miller who married Herman Watson in 1902 and Tom V. Neill in 1912, Sudie Alma Miller Montgomery, Sudie's husband William Robert Montgomery, Nannie Sue Miller (seated), Fannie Kate Miller (standing behind), Nannie Elizabeth Jane Carmical Miller (wife of William Henry Bryson Miller and mother of the children), and Sallie Miller. Seated in back are, from left, John Henry Miller, Herman Watson (firt husband of Willie Clyde Miller) and Coke Watson, brother of Herman Watson. The father of this family, William Miller, was born in 1860 in Dekalb County, son of Confederate Captain William Andrew Calhoun Miller. Sam, Sallie and Nannie were born in the house called Hill Place (Sam Hill Peach Orchard) at Five Points near East Newnan.

Description
An account of the resource
Many local residents thinking back to their childhood will remember the old Gem Theatre on the west side of the Court Square in downtown Newnan. This photo shows the old theatre and the adjacent buildings. Located to the south were Walter R. Thomas Jewelers and Newnan Hardware Company. The building where the jewelry store was housed previously was the location of the McCalla Drugstore. James McCalla, Sr., remembers working at the drugstore and going to the movie theatre on Saturdays, spending a dime to stay all day. Upstairs from the drugstore was the Newnan Building and Loan Association, now know as Newnan Federal Savings and Loans, before it moved to an old family home on Jefferson Street.

Description
An account of the resource
A half century after the War Between the States, Coweta County still had a good number of veterans of the conflict between the blue and gray. The man on the far right on the front row, holding a stick, is Abe Keith, whose wife, "Aunt" Ella Keith, lived on First Avenue. This Civil War veterans reunion was held between 1918 and 1920.

An account of the resource
In the 1980s the "fundmeters" on the Newnan Court Square are for the United Way fund drive, but in the 1940s during World War II the need was for war bonds. This photograph shows citizens gathered in front of the meter showing over-the-top war bond sales. Some of those pictured are Carl McCoy, Duke Blackburn, E.G. Cole, Pete Brown, Woodrow Craven, Chief Will Bennett Sanders and Hope Hubbard.
