As the current high school football season proceeds toward its conclusion, it is appropriate to look back at this Newnan high football team of 1938. On the front row are, left to right, beginning with the young man in overalls, James Norman, then kneeling in white shirts, Robert Royal, James Warren, Sterling Duke, (,,) Morris, and (,,) Dye. On the second row, kneeling, the seven young men with number 82 through 88 are Penny Cook, Kirby Starr, Vester Sewell, Roy Avery, Millard Fambro, James Grenga and Davis Dalton; and standing, Coach Jerome K. Jay. On the third row are, leaning over with numbers not visible, Frank Miller, Howard Parrott, Bordene Sprayberry, "Tuffy" Dingler and Dooley Bohanon. In back standing are the team manager Frank Elliot, in the sweater and hat; and, from left, Charles M. "Brer" Barron (now a local dentist), Winfield Edgeworth, Raymond Gordon, James "Cutter" Puckett, Mel Witcher, William Otwell, Bobby Reese, Jack Powell, Thomas Arnold, Ferrell Parrott, James Spreyberry, "Red" Martin and David Mealor.
