Description
Newnan was once the location of a college dedicated to the elevation of young women, and which later opened its doors to young men as well. Located on property bound by College Street on the west, Temple Avenue on the south, and Kellogg Street on the east, "College Temple" was erected in 1853 at the expense of Moses P. and Harriett Kellogg, Vermont educators. The college received its charter from the Georgia legislature in 1854, and it was the first female college to confer the degree of Master of Arts. The school closed in 1888. A residence at 73 College Street still standing was made from the school's former laboratory, which can be seen in this view of Arcade Hall at right. The laboratory is said to have housed the first printing press in a Southern college. Arcade Hall housed the chapel and recitation room. A third building was a dormitory, which was also the home of the Kellogg family.
