AN 1890'S POLITICAL FISH FRY
Subject
An 1890's Political Fish Fry
Description
This gathering in the Handy community is a political fish fry in the summer of 1893 for Newnan attorney, William Y. Atkinson, then in the midst of his campaign for governor of Georgia. It was hosted by W.L. Crowder near Handy Crossroads. Atkinson is seated on a chair at left with little girls in white dresses on his lap. He has a mustache. Atkinson was elected and served from 1894 to 1896. Mary Elizabeth Crowder, with a big bow in back of her head and bare feet dangling, is one of the little girls on Atkinson's lap. The Crowder family home, now owned by Mr. and Mrs. Jack Camp, was recently named to the National Register of Historic Places. The Crowders are some of Jack Camp's ancestors. Another family member, Theo Atkinson Crowder, was named for Gov. Atkinson. It should be noted that there are no women in the fish-fry photo. They could not vote and were frying the fish.
