Title

OLD COUNTY WORK CAMP

Subject

Coweta County Work Camp, c. 1941

Description

The men in this photograph from about 1941 or 1942 were officials from the old Coweta County Work Camp when it was located on property on the Carrollton Highway near Hospital Road - land now built up with retail businesses in and around Westside Plaza. The picture was provided by D.P. "red" Hanners and his wife, the former Willie Pearl Robinson. They found it in some stored belongings and presented it to Wendell Whitlock, county superintendent of public works and warden of the present Coweta County Correctional Institution. Mrs. Hanners' father, Joseph Henry Robinson, is among those in the group. Gathered for the photo are, from left, seated front, Lon Moore, Mr. Smith, Warden Ben Lambert, Mr. Millians (probably J.T., not sure of initials), and Buddy Wast. Standing in the center are, from left, youngsters Wallace Lambert and Young Haynes, sons of the warden and assistant warden. On the back row are, standing from left, Henry Robinson, Jim T. Shell, George Cooper, Clarence Johnson, Assistant Warden George Haynes, Nathan Walston and Mr. Walls (probably N.V. Walls, not sure of initials). Of all those pictured, only Wallace Lambert is still living. All the men were still working for the county prison camp when Wendell Whitlock went to work in August 1948, except for Walls who had just left to be street superintendent for the City of Newnan.
