Old Grantville Public School

Description

This photo provided by Edna Jackson of Grantville shows the second building used for Grantville Public School that was constructed in 1910. This structure was torn down when the facility now called the Thomas A. Glanton school building was built in 1937. Glanton was school principal at the time. (The 1937 building was renamed in Glanton's honor in the early 1980s but was closed as a school soon after. It is now used as offices by the West Georgia Regional Education Service Agency.) The bricks from the old building were used to build the Grantville Brown School, Mrs. Jackson said. The building was heated with pot-bellied stoves and was managed by a board of trustees composed of prominent men in the town. An auditorium built beside the school building in 1927 is still standing.
