Centennial Parade Float, September 28, 1927

Description

This photo from a collection provided by Mrs. Winnie Glover Cline shows a float entered by the Sarah Dickinson Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, in the Coweta County Centennial Parade September 28, 1927. It was photographed at Mrs. Mary Jones house, the house now used by Newnan Federal. The photo was included in "Coweta County Chronicles," the history book for which Mrs. Jones was co-author, on page 567. The float showed three things for which the D.A.R. stand, Americanization, placing memorial stones and history. America or Liberty is symbolized by the Stars and Stripes, a memorial stone is being unveiled, and history is represented by Clio the Muse of History. Also riding on the float were people costumed as George and Martha Washington, a Revolutionary soldier, Betsy Ross, boys and girls dress of the times and Sarah Dickinson as a young matron sitting at a spinning wheel. The D.A.R. Insignia and a Liberty Bell decorated the float. It was preceded by a Revolutionary officer riding his horse and followed by two young men in soldier costumes as rear escorts.
