OLD POPLAR LOG MISSION
Subject
The Old Poplar Log Mission
Description
Organized about 1931 by "Uncle" Henry Richards, the Old Poplar Log Mission met in Cole's Pasture, about 200 yards east of the present-day Congregational Holiness Church on Farmer Street. Services were each Sunday morning and Wednesday night. Lanterns were places in the trees to provide light for night services. When the group moved to Jefferson Street, a portion of the Poplar log was installed in the building and the name Poplar Log Mission was retained. In this photo are most of the charter members. The young boys in front are sitting on the Old Poplar Log from which the name originated. Among those in the group, not in order, are Leonard Barnes, Willard Hall, James Horton, Jack Watts, Earl Watts, Alton Watts, John Watts, Horace Wallace, the Rev.
