Once A College Town
College Temple
Newnan was once the location of a college dedicated to the elevation of young women, and which later opened its doors to young men as well. Located on property bound by College Street on the west, Temple Avenue on the south, and Kellogg Street on the east, "College Temple" was erected in 1853 at the expense of Moses P. and Harriett Kellogg, Vermont educators. The college received its charter from the Georgia legislature in 1854, and it was the first female college to confer the degree of Master of Arts. The school closed in 1888. A residence at 73 College Street still standing was made from the school's former laboratory, which can be seen in this view of Arcade Hall at right. The laboratory is said to have housed the first printing press in a Southern college. Arcade Hall housed the chapel and recitation room. A third building was a dormitory, which was also the home of the Kellogg family.

Located in the Raymond community on Sheddon Avenue, this old school began as a one-room school house about 1910. The community of Raymond was named after Mr. and Mrs. Jay Ray, and the school was named after Mary Ray - the Mary Ray Memorial School. Mrs. Allie Snyder was one of the students of the first school session, and S.L. Robertson told how he and C.C. Owen of Newnan came to school in an ox cart. Two school rooms and a lunch room were added to the original building, and a hand-painted canvas curtain was installed on the stage. At one time the school was put under the direction of the county because of lack of funds for proper operation and upkeep. It was turned back to Raymond when the schools were consolidated and moved to East Coweta. Later the G.I.'s used it for a while for study. The building is still standing and is used as the Raymond Community Building.

Greenville Street, Downtown
It has been a while since two-way traffic was allowed on Greenville Street in downtown Newnan. This photograph appeared in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Magazine October 8, 1950, with the article "Newnan ... Home-Owned Industries Produce." The photo was taken from the roof of the Post Office, looking north up Greenville Street. Lee-King Drug Company in the building at left occupies the spot now housing Fabric Outlet. The Coweta County Courthouse stands in the distance. Along the streets are the old light poles, with the old street lights still attached. The poles - replaced in recent years when wiring was placed undergound downtown - were made by R.D. Cole Manufacturing Company. Founded in the mid 1800s, the Cole company became one of Georgia's first steel-fabricating plants and made elevated water tanks and huge steam boilers. It was later purchase and became Brown Steel. The article discusses such home-grown industries as Beavers Packing Co., which produced a variety of meat products; Royal Manufacturing Co., one of the country's largest manufacturers of toilet seats; and such textile mills as the Arnall Mills and Newnan Cotton Mills. Arnall Mills made blankets sold nationally by various companies including Sears Roebuck. The home-grown industries, largely responsible for Newnan's fine homes and most of its smaller dwellings, once prompted Newnan to call itself the third richest town per capita in America.

A Lost Treasure Found
Young Ladies gathered
This old photograph was in surprisingly good condition after being discovered in the wall of the old J.W. Cole home in Moreland. It was found when the new owners, Jerry and Diane Evans, were doing restoration work on the house. No on in Moreland is able to identify any of the young ladies or the building; and Mrs. Mullys Murphy, who is 90, said it was before her time.
