Description
These individual graduation portraits and view of the Newnan public school are from a composite made by photographer S. Fowler in 1914. The picture was brought to the Male Academy Museum, and the provider is unknown. The building, later known as the Temple Avenue School, was constructed in 1888 but soon became inadequate. After several additions, a new school was constructed beside it at Temple Avenue and Jackson Streets in 1916 that served as Newnan High until the present LaGrange Street building was constructed in 1952. Both buildings are now gone and stood on the site of what is now the Newnan city park. The Temple Avenue School, the first public school in Coweta County, was demolished in May 1972. It had been condemned and abandoned entirely in 1956 upon the completion of Elm Street Elementary School. Former students had nostalgic memories of "the good old days" spent in the Temple Avenue building, which originally boasted a tall steeple for the traditional school bell and fireplaces to keep the students warm in winter. Arnold Bowers, now retired, was the last principal of the old Temple Avenue School when it closed in 1956.
