This photo from the files of the Newnan-Coweta Historical Society, shows one of Newnan's large old families. The family is that of Mrs. I.E.C.W. Smith about 1917. From left are, front, Mrs. Sarah Peniston Moses, Ellis Redding Sims, Sr., Mrs. Em Smith Sims, John Peniston Sims, Mrs. Catherine Sims Edwards, Dr. Joseph Bowdoin Peniston, Mrs. I.E.C.W. Smith (Catherine Romanz Edmondson) and Dr. Paul Peniston; second row, Charles LEavell Moses, John Redding Sims, Dr. Paulgene Peniston, Ellis Hardeman Peniston, Mrs. Frances Stanton Peniston, Miss Ethel Smith, Mrs. Catherine Romanz Cook Faker, Mrs. Mary Peniston Cook and Miss Lucia Smith; back, Mrs. Elizabeth Smith Faver (seated), Miss Nelly Kate Smith, Mrs. Nara Smith-Fischer Peniston and Thomas Jackson Peniston. The Dr. Peniston at the right on the front is Kate Edmondson Smith's older son, who was christened Paul Eugene Smith. He took his paternal grandmother's maiden name, Peniston, to distinguish him from several other Paul Smiths living also in Palmetto at the time. Mrs. Smith's younger son, Dr. I.E.C.W. Smith, Jr. is the only one of her six children not appearing in the picture. Dr. I.E.C.W. Smith, her husband, died in 1901.
